The course is designed to provide knowledge and understanding of the atomic structure, the physical and chemical behavior of the atoms, and subatomic particles under different conditions. This course will focus on the electronic and thermodynamic properties of different chemical species. The course is expected to help students to understand the constituents of petroleum hydrocarbons, their occurrence, separation, purification, and utilization.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able 1. To understand the electronic structure of atoms, the properties of different fundamental particles, and the systematic way to learn about different elements. 2. To describe interactions, hybridization, and geometry of different chemical species. 3. To demonstrate concepts of thermodynamics, different thermodynamic quantities, various states of matter, and their dependency on temperature and pressure. 4. To analyze electrolytes and electrolytic solutions using different electrochemical cells. 5. To measure conductance, pH, and buffer solution behavior. 6. To learn how to calculate the surface tension of water by the capillary rise method and the surface tension of mercury by the sessile drop method. 7. To know the basic reactions of aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons and the mechanisms of common organic reactions.
